What is the Difference Between MOBI and AZW3
Some of the Kindle eBooks are in the MOBI format, and some are AZW3 files. You may be confused about why Kindle eBooks are saved in different formats. What is the difference between those two eBook formats?
MOBI eBook format, developed by Mobipocket.com, is sold to Amazon in 2005. There are 2 MOBI formats used for eBooks – MOBI7 and MOBI8. MOBI7 (KF7) is the eBook format developed with basic HTML language. The eBooks saved as MOBI7 format do not support to change the font, text size, layout within Kindle e-readers. MOBI8 (KF8) is developed based on MOBI7 format with support HTML5 and CSS, which means it supports to display eBook with complicated layout and multi-media (except audios and videos).
In general, we could say that the MOBI8 format is the same as the AZW3 format. You may ask why? The reason is that the AZW3 eBook format is developed from MOBI8 format for publishing Kindle eBooks with DRM (Digital Rights Management) mechanism.

So in other words, the main difference between the MOBI and AZW3 formats is their support for complex layouts and multimedia. Because AZW3 eBooks support more styles, fonts, layouts and multimedia content (except audio and video) on Kindle devices, the reading experience of AZW3 (KF8) format e-books is better than that of MOBI (KF7) format eBooks.
As the proprietary formats of Amazon, it is obvious that you can't open books in these two formats on other apps or devices without associated with Kindle account.
